Why the name “Kiwi Crate?”

One of my kids’ favorite push toys is a stuffed kiwi that my husband and I had picked up from New Zealand years ago.  As we were running through potential names, it struck me that Kiwi (as he’s called) would make the perfect mascot for our company.

As my son and daughter envision him, Kiwi is friendly, curious, and a willing companion on all their adventures – just the sort of qualities we hope to convey ourselves.  Since my kids were the inspiration for the company to begin with, I love having them tied into the process at so many levels, from branding and design critics to Chief Product Testers.  In fact, they picked out our logo when presented with a few different kiwi options.

As additional background, the kiwi is a bird found only in New Zealand.  It has no tail and tiny 2 inch wings on its chicken-sized body.  It doesn’t fly.  When Yael and I had separately visited New Zealand years ago to experience the country, our travels included an opportunity to see the kiwi.  We really appreciate the fun adventurous spirit, the innovation, and the natural beauty of the country.  The kiwi, which is known to be super alert, stands for the “ability to give birth to large ideas.”   Again, all of those qualities are ones that Kiwi Crate aspires to and embraces in children.  And yes – we love kiwi fruit too.

These are photos of Sandra and Yael and the kiwis taken in New Zealand years ago… little did we know!

  1. Hi! I just found your website.. I love the idea of the crate! And cool that you chose to call it Kiwi Crate… I live in New Zealand! 🙂 I’m a little sad I can’t order one for my 3 year old girl… maybe I’ll just have to move to the US! 🙂 I wish you the best of luck with your awesome idea!!!

    1. Thanks so much, Christine! We’re such huge fans of New Zealand. Hope we’re able to get there someday soon. In the meantime, thanks so much for visiting our blog!

    2. Hi guys – I couldn’t agree more with Christine. I’ve just come across your website and as a fellow New Zealander am going to make another plea to ship to us…please. Do it for all the little kiwi’s out here 🙂

  2. Hi Kiwi Crate,

I live in the United States these days, but grew up and have still spent the majority of my life in New Zealand. Given the cost and time on a plane my wife and I don’t visit as often as I would like, but when we do I have gotten into visiting and taking pictures of the various large items (Scissors, bikes, etc) along the way. However perhaps because I grew up in the North Island, and haven’t spent time in the South Island on our return trips yet, I don’t believe I have seen the two Kiwi’s pictured on this page – Might you recall where you might have seen them?

Christine, Matthew, and Jacqueline – If you happen to be notified of my post, or revisit this page many years later, presuming Kiwi Crate have no issue, I would be happy to find a way to deliver the items to me and ship them to New Zealand by whichever means of shipping you would like. I know what it is like to not have access to certain products because of living in New Zealand and would love to help out where I can…

  3. Just signed up to receive crates and have recommend to all my work mates for their children too. I think the idea is fantastic, I cannot wait for it to arrive for my son.

  4. Kia ora,
Can you please tell me the postage time to N.Z and approx costs. I’m looking at the Tinker subscription package.
    Thank you for your time.

    Kind regards

  5. So now I know why your company appeared to ‘steal’ our bird as your name. As a purchaser from Aotearoa/New Zealand I just received my first crate. So exciting and can’t wait to share with my students. Glad you love our country as much as we do. Kia Kaha…be strong.

  6. Super exciting that you are shipping to New Zealand. I have just ordered a crate for my 3 year old and one for my 14 month old. Really looking forward to the delivery. 😀

  7. My little Kiwi boy (a mini engineer) just finished his first crate. What a fabulous, challenging and creative kit! We’re so impressed – can’t wait for the next one to arrive.

  8. FYI
Kiwi birds are native to New Zealand, because they were on New Zealand land before any human, but they didn’t originate from New Zealand. Kiwi birds DNA had traced back to it’s ancestors, elephant birds, which are from Madagascar.
Kiwifruits are not native nor did they originated from New Zealand. Kiwifruit is native to north-central and eastern China.

Anyway, these projects are great for children, but do you think you might do some kind of special deals like:
    – Order (amount), & you will recieve each of the ordered parcels shipped for FREE!
    – If you buy (amount), you will recieve _____ FREE
    – Subcribe to recieve the 12mths option, pay FULL COSTS upfront & you will recieve the next 3 months for HALF the RRP price!

Just an idea, since it does seem expensive, especially when there’s multiple children in a family who are at different age stages……

  9. I live in Dunedin, New Zealand 🇳🇿 (In the South Island) it’s more beautiful in the South Island cause of the scenery and the lush green forrests, etc. If you come to New Zealand again I’d like to meet you, your husband and your family. Hope you’re all doing well in USA. Kia kaha – stand strong.
