Sometimes, going on a nature walk with my kids is a bit like a juggling act! First, my son discovers a cool flower he wants me to save, then my daughter spots a flat, shiny pebble that’s perfect for skipping…and, soon, my hands (and pockets) are full of all kinds of odds and ends.
Well, to me they’re odds and ends. To my kids, they’re treasures discovered on an adventure! Kids are natural explorers. They notice everything, and they’re fascinated by the smallest things. This month, we hoped to give kids a chance to hone their discovering and observational skills with our Nature Explorer crate!
You can really see our friends Izze and Eli’s Nature Explorer skills at work in this month’s video. They discovered a creek bed where they skipped stones, spotted a fallen California poppy, and came upon a pile of twigs that was perfect for a fairy house. And they kept mementos of all those little adventures in their nature collection box!
Scavenger Hunt Box
We wanted a box that was easy for kids to build and decorate—but sturdy enough to last through a summer full of outdoor adventures. That was a tall order, but we knew the hard work had paid off when we saw our kid testers happily building and filling their boxes!
With summer approaching, we were thinking about outdoor adventures, but Sam reminded us to include enough cards for indoor adventures, too.
For the starlight lantern, we imagined the fun of summer camping—whether that means the great outdoors, your backyard or your living room! Our testers loved building their own lanterns and designing their own constellations with the special star punch. When Ella’s lantern lit up for the first time, her face lit up, too!
Our testers had lots of questions about nature and the stars, so, for this month’s Explore More resource page, we found a star-finding app, books about rocks and bugs, and, as always, great crafts from our DIY Ideas site.
