Birch Tree Tape Resist Picture

I love the look of birch trees with their white trunks and dark rings—and my daughter loves resist paintings— so I combined our two loves for a great project!

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. blue paint
  2. paintbrush
  3. paper
  4. black pen
  5. washi tape - or painter's tape/masking tape
  6. buttons
  7. white glue
  1. Since my daughter is 3, I began by taping birch trees for her with washi tape on paper. Older kiddos can do this step on their own! If you don't have washi tape, you can use painter's tape or masking tape too.

  2. Next, my daughter took blue watercolor paint and did a wash over the trees. She said, "Oh, sky!"

  3. We let this dry, then I carefully helped her peel off the tape, revealing lovely white birch tree trunks.

  4. Next, I helped her add the tell-tale birch tree rings with a black pen.

  5. Then, for a splash of color and fun, my daughter glued colored buttons on the trees. She chose a pink button first, of course!

  6. The end result: beautiful button tape-resist birch trees!
