Churning Butter

On weekends, we love hosting family and friends for a leisurely brunch. My son loves contributing to the spread, whether it's mixing the pancake batter or setting the table. This weekend, we decided to make homemade butter. He was so proud to watch our guests dig into his creation.

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. heavy whipping cream
  2. glass jar - with lid
  3. marbles (3) - optional
  4. salt (optional)
  1. Gather your ingredients!

  2. Pour heavy whipping cream into the glass jar until it is halfway full.

    Adding marbles to the cream will help churn the butter faster, but this is not required.

  3. Tightly screw on the lid and start shaking! We actually turned on some music for this step. Shaking to the beat made things that much more fun. The liquid will start to thicken. In about five minutes, you can take a peek. At this point, you'll have whipped cream.

  4. Put your lid back on and shake for another five minutes. As you shake, you'll hear and feel the mixture become liquid-like again and start sloshing in the jar. This is the buttermilk separating from the butter. At this point, give it a good shake for an extra minute to help the butter finish solidifying.

  5. Open your jar and pour out the buttermilk.

  6. Scoop out the butter into a small bowl. Rinse it under cold water. You'll want to gently massage it at this point to wash away any remaining buttermilk.

    At this point, we added a little salt to our butter.

  7. Serve your homemade butter and enjoy!

    Since there are no preservatives, make sure to store the butter in the fridge to keep it fresh.
