How we did it:

Materials List

  1. air-dry clay
  2. paint & paint brush
  3. string
  1. We used natural dough for our amulets, you could easily make them with salt dough.

  2. After reading and learning some about Ancient Egypt amulets, Maddie chose to make an ankh, and Trev wanted to make a scarab beetle. We added a touch of water to our clay, to make it nice and sticky.

  3. They set to work!

  4. Trev chose to make designs in his scarab... you could carve symbols, if you like.

  5. Maddie's ankh didn't need a hole for hanging, but we put a hole in the beetle amulet, for stringing.

  6. When they had dried, the children painted them... Madeleine chose a gold metallic acrylic, and Trev chose blue (to resemble lapis!) and highlighted it with gold.

  7. We strung them, and now they can either be worn or hung proudly in our home!
