Wax-Resist Painting with Liquid Watercolor

Wax-Resist Painting with Liquid Watercolor

Any color crayon will work in wax-resist painting, but a white crayon allows children to write “secret” messages. Just paint over the crayon design and watch in delight as the paint magically reveals the image.

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. liquid watercolors
  2. paint brush
  3. crayons
  4. canvas
  5. small bowls
  1. Gather your materials. Protect your workspace with newspaper or a brown paper bag.

  2. Draw a design on the canvas with crayons. You can use any color crayon you want, but use white if you want to reveal a secret design. Either way, just be sure to firmly press the crayon into the canvas.

  3. Pour liquid watercolor into small bowls and use a paintbrush to apply it on the canvas. Watch how the paint “resists” the wax!
