Cotton Pussy Willows

Cotton Pussy Willows

Pussy Willows are one of the first signs of spring. Since we don't have a blooming tree nearby, we made some of our own!

Ages:
5 - 9
Est. Time:
<1 hour

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. cotton balls - or wool, or cotton swabs
  2. decorative paper
  3. construction paper
  4. twigs
  5. glue
  6. small bowl of water
  7. scissors
  1. If you don't have decorative paper, by all means, make your own designer paper! Madeleine chose her 'vase' paper first, then chose a complimentary color of construction paper.

  2. First we had to make the catkins! We chose to make our own, but you could snip the ends off cotton swabs if you like. Maddie pulled the cotton balls into two or three pieces, depending upon how large the ball was.

  3. She dipped one section into water, then rolled it into a small ball,

  4. then rolled it back and forth between two fingers to make a pointed oval shape. They were set aside to dry as each was made.

  5. When they were dry, we put a bit of glue onto the bottom of the cotton,

  6. and then pasted them onto thin twigs that we had collected outside.

  7. I asked Madeleine what kind of vase she wanted to make, "A heart!" Of course she wanted a heart! "Do you want to make a template for the shape, or do you want to just draw one?" "A template!" And so she drew and cut out a template from scratch paper,

  8. then traced it onto her 'vase',

  9. and cut that out, too.

  10. She put glue around the bottom half of the heart, and, angling so that the top and middle were up off the bottom paper, leaving a pocket, pasted the heart down.

  11. All that's left to do is to arrange the now-dry willow branches!

  12. So, so pretty! A bit of spring, just for us.
