Flag Garlands

Flag Garlands

During international competitions, my kids love pointing out all the countries they can recognize and seeing each of the uniformed teams proudly waving their country's flag.

Create a simple flag garland using geometric paper shapes, and hang them for display. We started out with creating existing flags, but decided it was more fun to design our own! If you could create your own country and design the flag, what would it look like?

Ages:
7 - 16
Est. Time:
1-2 hours

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. colored cardstock
  2. white cardstock
  3. scissors
  4. glue
  5. string
  6. hole punch
  1. Cut some white cardstock to the desired flag size. We used 4x6" sheets of cardstock for our flag base.

  2. Prepare the decorating shapes! Cut out some colorful geometric shapes like circles, stripes, and triangles of all different sizes.

  3. Place the shapes on the white flag base and use glue to stick them down.

Tip: To create the American flag, we printed the blue and white stars. You can download our template here.

  4. What other geometric patterns can you think of? Try designing your own flag!

  5. Once the flags are complete. Take a hole punch to create two holes, one on each top corner.

  6. Cut a segment of string and thread the flags on one by one.

  7. Hang the flags up and display your creation! You can either string them outdoors between trees, or indoors between walls.
