Leprechaun Trap

Leprechaun Trap

St. Patrick's Day is a great time to learn about myths! Ancient Irish folklore tells a story of a mischievous leprechaun, a fairy who hides his pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. If caught by a human, a leprechaun will grant 3 wishes, in exchange for his freedom. Join us in this design challenge to create the ultimate leprechaun trap! May the luck of the Irish be with you!

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. paper bowl
  2. hole punch
  3. green felt
  4. gold glitter foam
  5. rainbow pipe cleaners
  6. glue
  7. string
  8. scissors
  9. cotton balls
  10. crayon
  1. Punch a hole on the rim of the paper bowl.

  2. Glue cotton balls all over the outside of the bowl. This will form your cloud.

  3. Cut the purple pipe cleaner in half and shape it into a semi-circle. Glue the ends to the center of the bowl. Repeat this step with the rest of the colors, cutting the pipe cleaners to size.

  4. Double knot a piece of string to the end of the crayon. Stand the crayon on top of the green felt sheet and prop the bowl up, with the crayon point in the hole.

  5. You will need some gold under your rainbow to lure your leprechaun in! We cut circles out of gold glitter foam.

  6. Place the pile of gold coins underneath the rainbow. Glue one gold coin to the other end of the string attached to the crayon. When a leprechaun reaches to collect this special gold coin, the trap will fall and you'll have caught yourself a leprechaun! How else could you create a leprechaun trap? What other design elements could you incorporate into yours?
