The Very Hungry Caterpillar Puzzle

Create an adorable Very Hungry Caterpillar Puzzle that your child will play with over and over again!

Ages:
2 - 6
Est. Time:
<1 hour

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. white paper (5-7) - cut into circles
  2. paint - green, white, red, yellow and orange
  3. scissors
  4. sponges - cut into quarters
  5. glue
  6. pipe cleaners - brown
  1. Prepare the paints for the caterpillar's body using three different shades of green. We used dark green, 3/4 dark green and 1/4 white, and 1/2 dark green and 1/2 white for our mixtures. Cut white paper into circles about the size of a salad plate. Cut a sponge into 4 pieces.

  2. Give your child a few circles to paint green using the sponges.

  3. Encourage your child to mix colors, and try using the sponge in different ways to create different textures.

  4. Prepare yellow, red and orange paints for the caterpillar's head.

  5. Have your child paint one circle using red, orange and yellow paint for the caterpillar's head. Again, mixing colors is encouraged!

  6. For the caterpillar's eyes, cut two sets of ovals, one of which is slightly smaller than the other. Have your child paint the larger set of ovals using yellow and orange and the smaller pair with the greens. Glue the green pair on top of the orangish pair, then glue both sets of eyes to the caterpillar's face.

  7. Cut two brown pipe cleaners into quarters for the legs. Create the feet by bending the end of each pipe cleaner as shown in the photo. Make as many as you like, but at least 2 legs for each painted body circle.

  8. The completed puzzle pieces should look like this.

  9. After enjoying Eric Carle's book, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", give your child all the prepared parts and have him create his own version of a very hungry caterpillar.

  10. This puzzle can be done over and over and the caterpillar can be different every time!
