How we did it:

Materials List

  1. paper towel tube (cardboard)
  2. tape (masking, painter's, or duct)
  3. scissors
  1. You can really use almost any kind of tape for this project, since casts come in all sorts of colors and patterns. Masking tape, painters tape, or electrical tape would all work. We found duct tape in colorful prints discounted at a big box store, so we went with that. Grab a couple of cardboard tubes (toilet paper-sized ones work well for younger children, paper towel-sized for older children) and scissors, and you're ready to begin.

  2. Have your child cut a slit down the length of the cardboard tube. This is a great hand-strengthening exercise.

  3. Try it on for size. This one was too long.

  4. Trim to fit.

  5. Have your child cut strips of tape and wrap them around the cardboard tube, folding the edges over to the inside of the tube. Continue until tube is covered.

  6. The finished product. He is ready to fool Daddy when he gets home.

  7. Modeling their casts and practicing their joke with punch line: "I broke my arm. [dramatic pause] MY FUNNY BONE! APRIL FOOLS!"

  8. My son decided it would be fun if our dog played an April Fools joke of her own. She disagreed and refused to keep the cast on for more than a second, just long enough for me to snap this photo.
