Bending Turkey Bones

Bending Turkey Bones

Bones that bend? Is that even possible? Yes it is! Vinegar is a mild acid, but it is strong enough to dissolve away the calcium in bones. Once the calcium dissolves, all that is left is soft bone tissue. Give this experiment a try to see it for yourself!

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. large jar - (with lid)
  2. turkey bone - (leg or drumstick bone works the best)
  3. vinegar
  1. Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner and save a couple turkey bones to experiment with later.

  2. Wash off bones in running water to remove any remaining meat.

Gently try bending the bones and notice how hard they are. Turkey bones, like our bones, have a mineral in them called calcium that makes them hard.

  3. Put your clean turkey bones in a jar and fill the jar up with vinegar.

  4. Close the jars with a lid and let the bones soak for 3 days.

  5. After 3 days remove the bones and rinse them off. Try bending them again. How flexible are your turkey bones now?
