Plantable Paper

This has got to be one of my new favorite crafts, and my kids' too! Who knew you could make paper so easily... paper that grows flowers!

<1 hour

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. scrap paper
  2. newspaper
  3. hot water
  4. blender
  5. felt sheets (2)
  6. paper bags - large
  7. flower seeds
  8. scissors
  1. We gathered our scrap paper and some sheets of newspaper.

  2. Emma enjoyed tearing the paper and adding it to the blender.

  3. We filled our blender about half way with paper and added hot water. Be sure the paper is covered completely with hot water. We let it sit for about 15 minutes to soften the paper.

  4. Next, I took over and blended up our mixture until I had a soft mush. There will be water on the very top that can be poured right out.

  5. We placed a sheet of felt on top of a paper grocery bag and I gave the kids a big scoop of the paper mush. They used their hands to press it out and make it as thin as they could.

  6. Next we added the flower seeds by sprinkling them right on top and pressing them into the paper.

  7. When we had our seeds pressed in well and a nice thin layer of paper we moved our felt to a new grocery bag and set it aside to dry.

  8. After day one I flipped it over to a new felt sheet. It took about another day or two to dry out completely. When it does it lifts up from the felt like this.

  9. Emma carefully cut out shapes with scissors. She planted one right away and made a few special shapes to be gifts for friends and family. We are very excited to see our flowers bloom.
