Shrunken Apple Heads

Shrunken Apple Heads

I've been wanting to try these shrunken apple heads for a few Halloweens now but have purposely been holding back for fear of traumatizing my daughter. But this year, I showed my five-year-old a photo of this project and her eyes lit up. Yes, my little Halloween crafter loves this creepy craft just as much as I do!

How we did it:

Materials List

  1. apples
  2. lemon
  3. carving tools
  4. craft sticks / popsicle sticks
  1. We searched the kitchen drawers for tools that would work well for etching an apple. We were excited to find some pumpkin carving tools that worked great. We also used craft sticks which are great for little hands.

  2. First peel your apples. Leave the top and bottom peel to keep the apple sturdy.

  3. Now start carving your apples. Watch as they get creepier by the minute!

  4. At this point, squeeze some lemon juice over the apples to keep them from browning too much. Then place them on a baking sheet.

  5. Now for the tough part...they have to go into the oven at 170 degrees for pretty much two days...or longer! We popped them in and would turn off the oven when we left the house or went to sleep. They were really fun to keep checking on and see them transform, plus your house will smell like yummy fall apples.

  6. When they feel dry and like rubber, they are done and ready to spook little siblings everywhere! You can add some pine needle hair, rice grain teeth, or black bean eyes if you dare! We liked them just like this to add to our Halloween fright collection.
