Quick-Flip Bottle Trick

Materials you’ll need

  • Bottle
  • Fly screen

  • Rubber band

  • Water

  • Toothpicks or matchsticks

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1: Cut out a small piece of fly screen that covers the opening of the bottle and extends over the sides slightly.

Step 2: Place the fly screen over the bottle and secure tightly with the rubber band.

Step 3: Fill the bottle with water through the fly screen.

Step 4: Tip the bottle upside down slowly if you want to see the water still be able to pour out. Flip the bottle over quickly to see how the water stays in place!

BONUS EXPERIMENT: Take a toothpick or matchstick and push it up through the fly screen to watch it fly up the bottle!

Grownup guide

Water has cohesive properties, meaning it sticks to itself. It is also adhesive, meaning it likes to stick to other surfaces too! Although air wants to enter the bottle when it’s flipped upside down, that force isn’t strong enough to counteract the water being attracted to both itself and the flyscreen, so the water stays put inside the bottle. When slowly tipping the bottle sideways, however, the increased pressure of the water on a certain area of the flyscreen is too much, and the air can flow in. But when you insert a toothpick, the water molecules form a seal around it and prevent lots of water from falling out, sucking it up inside!
