Make Your Own Science Crossword Puzzle
The first crossword puzzle as we know it ran in a New York newspaper in 1913. Its creator, Arthur Wynne, called it a “Word-Cross.” A few weeks later, a printing mistake flipped the name around, and “Cross-Word” stuck.
Crosswords run on words, and science has some of the best. Many of them pack a whole idea into a single word. NOCTURNAL means an animal is most active at night. CAMOUFLAGE is how a speckled moth can blend right into tree bark.
In this game, you’re the puzzle maker. Pick a theme, then tap 5 to 10 science words, like VOLCANO and FRICTION. Every word has to cross another one, so the grid shifts and grows as you build. Then solve it yourself or hand it to a friend to crack. Want a puzzle you haven’t seen? Try a surprise crossword.
