Pie Baking Game: How Do You Know When It’s Done?
How can you tell a pie is done without cutting into it? Bakers look for two clues. The crust turns golden as oven heat browns the sugars and proteins in the dough. The filling gives a clue too. A fruit pie bubbles thick in the middle, and a pumpkin pie is ready when its edges are set and just the middle jiggles.
In this game, you’re the baker. Pour in apple, cherry, or pumpkin filling and crimp the edge. Fruit pies get a top crust next: lattice, crumble, or a full top with steam vents you cut yourself. Then set the oven and keep an eye on both bars. Pull the pie too soon and the slice slumps. Wait too long and the crust gets extra toasty. Once it cools, top a slice for each friend to match their card. Your pies line up on the cooling rack, so try a new oven heat and see what changes.
