Why Do Leaves Change Color?

Oct 21, 2026 / By Adam

In fall, the trees in your neighborhood begin to change color. Birches turn gold, many maples blaze red, and many young oaks hang on to their brown leaves all winter. The yellow and orange in many leaves were there all summer, hidden under green chlorophyll. As the days get shorter, trees stop making new chlorophyll, and the hidden colors show through. Some trees, like many maples, also make brand-new red color, especially when sunny days are followed by cool nights.

Slide the day length and night temperature to see it happen. Each tree has its own goal, from the hidden yellow in a birch to the oak that won’t let go. Shake the trees, call up a gust of wind, and use the magnifying glass to find the critters living in the branches. When you’re done, rake up a giant leaf pile with Steve.

Ready to explore nature up close? The Nature Collection comes with real science tools, like a magnifying glass and measuring tape, for examining what you find outside, plus a pair of blooming nature buddies to make. Bring home a few fallen leaves and see how many colors you can spot.
