Hydraulic Claw

It was the perfect rainy day project as it kept my daughter occupied and learning.

I have been obsessing over Kiwico for months and finally ordered some of the items that managed to arrive all the way to the UK in good nick.
My son is a wee 5 year (below the suggested age group for this item) but understands the concept of ‘hydraulics’ because we subscribe to Mel science boxes catered to 5 year olds and one of the box was about hydraulics. Both my son and I were impressed with the contents of the box and how it is such a layered project - so you don’t finish the project as soon as we finish building one thing. The book that came in the box is good too. He has been inventing his own contraptions and seems to enjoy himself while playing with his invention.
I look forward to buying more things from kiwico store but they seem to have limited items that can be shipped to the UK which is a shame.

My son liked this project but it was difficult to get it connected to the box & to make it fully functional. Still his 2nd favorite project

My son absolutely loved the hydraulic claw! He wasn’t expecting it and really didn’t know what it was until we got into the science of it. Once it was completed he said it was “So Cool” and his favorite box yet.

My nephew really loved putting this together, and together with my niece, have discovered that there are tons of things in my sister's house that they can pick up!

Enjoyed any minute putting it together with my son and still enjoying it see him playing with it

Liked this one a lot. First box that I got for my 4 year old daughter so I did do most of the work for it but I like the little experiment page that goes over the difference between using air VS water and how it makes a difference in compression. I would like more kits like this that have little side experiments that I can do with my daughter so she can have a better understanding of how things work and why it’s important to use one thing vs another. I do wish it came with a little food coloring pods or something to use in the water because that does make it easier for her to understand which syringe moves certain parts of the claw. Overall fun project (:

great design. works awesome, although with all the weight of the hydraulics, over time it starts to bend over. Maybe add some support in the main arm to keep to more ridgid

My granddaughter really enjoyed building the claw and learning about hydraulics. The one flaw in the design was the base. Soon after attaching the claw to the box, it became wobbly and began to tilt - almost to the point of falling over. We switched the box around and tried again, but had the same result. I think it needs a better system of attachment to the box.

Construct your own lifting claw and learn how hydraulic systems work. Continue the experimentation with bonus design challenges.

Glowing Pendulum

Great kit. Granddaughter loved it. She was able to follow directions with little help.

This was the coolest thing on the planet. The darker the rook the better. Chaotic motion is really cool. Once you think it's about to stop, it keeps going! I love that you can make secret messages with citric acid, too.

My 9 year old is having so much fun exploring ways to use this project. I do wish it were a bit more sturdy.

Very engaging

The pendulum was awesome to assemble and my daughter had a blast watching it drop and swoop to make chaotic patterns.

Drop and swoop!

My son really wanted to make a double pendulum so he was so excited about this crate. It contained everything he needed and the directions were easy for him to follow.

Loved it!

Reading the Tinkerzine and learning about chaotic motion was a cool lesson for both me and my son. Seeing the science play out in real life was a great way of applying science to hands-on learning.

Chaotic motion lesson

Flourescence is amazing! My son and I created the glowing pendulum and it was so exciting seing chaotic motion in action!

Flourescence is amazing!

We learned about flourescence, chaotic systems, and LED circuits. Such a cool lesson for my 11 year old! They really grasped all of the STEM concepts

Lots of STEM concepts

Between the UV Light to the instructional video, KiwiCo sets up each project for success. My child is always fully prepared and guided as he creates another awesome project.

Bottle Rocket

Great fun. Took a little while to get the knack of the launch but would definitely buy again :)

It was really straightforward to put together and worked really well. Was very fun

My son and husband and I all absolutely loved this one! We took it out to launch several times!

Very easy and fun project. My son loves it! It shoots pretty high. Good time.

Please send more baking soda and citric acid next time. And balloons that are more elastic!

I have to say this one was the best even for me! Lol my son LOVED this rocket! He found it so fun and even while putting it together he was super excited to watch it launch! Love that everything was provided.

My kids (ages 8 and 10) loved the rocket!! Multiple uses - highly recommend.

My kiddos (8 and 10) did this crate as part of summer camp. The rocket assembly directions were easy to follow. The construction is surprisingly sturdy. We did struggle a bit to keep the foam cone attached, but it flew fine without it. It took a few tries to get it to launch successfully, but that encouraged experimentation. There were plenty of extra ingredients to launch several times. My hubby and I kept playing long after the kids lost interest, and we used it again several days later.

Since my granddaughter is only 7, this one was harder for her to read and understand by herself. Her mom helped her to understand the directions and she was able to do it with minor assistance. They sent me a video , but I don't know how to send it. The rocket on the second or third time went as high as the peak of their townhouse roof. They are in a two story.

We had so much fun with this! Completed with girls—ages 7 and 10. Both loved it so much! Lots of squealing and laughing and they launched it over and over. The foam point wouldn’t stay on after it got wet, so that was the only downside. Otherwise, it was perfect!

My 5 year old grandson and I did this together and he absolutely loved it(so did Mimi). It didn't spin like it said it would and he was sure to point that out, but we still had a great time building it and watching it soar.

My son and I loved Putting it together and enjoyed every minute of it. It's the best product and my son will have these memories to last a lifetime.

Engineer 3 wooden animals to explore the mechanics of friction! Make a sloth that climbs up a vine, build a gecko that shimmies up a string, and craft a spider that spools itself upward.

Includes illustrated blueprint instructions, materials, and a special-edition Tinker Zine magazine to learn more about the science of friction.

Friction Climbers

My 8 year old grandson loved these! They each work differently, so that made it more interesting to put them together and play with than I expected. He was very proud of successfully putting them together. I think he had some help from his 11 year old sister, but they didn’t need any adult help and I think that was only for the first one. Definitely recommend!

Loved that there were 3 builds in one kit. The sloth and lizard climbers worked great. The spider though did not climb all the way to the top because it ran out of bottom string - I think the string needs to be longer on the bottom so the kids actually get the spider to climb to the top of the upper string. The spider also took a lot of force to go up and then fell back down when you let go of the string - whereas the other two stayed up with friction. Lots of good teaching moments and the reading material showed the bumpiness of surfaces and that is why there is friction. I know this kit is for ages 9+ but my 6 year old loved it. He is accelerated in building and science so he regularly completes kits above his age level from LEGOS through Kiwicrates.

The directions were very clear and the pictures easy to interpret. A perfect choice for a 9 year old!

Love the 3 animals. I have 2 grand daughters. We make one together than each girl gets to work independently.

My 10 year old son loved this. I love that it is wooden and can last

Afternoon of entertainment

there were several projects in one kit so my child was able to share it with a friend who happened to be over when it arrived. They worked together to put them together and experiemnt with them. They even went online for the template to make the dove.

Play date crate!

I liked this crate I thought it was great. My son hangs the animals from his pump stand. He loved the animals and the way they moved.

A great crate!

Great

This crate was very fun to do. I had a lot of fun doing this with my granddaughter. She loves how they work and look! Thank you!

Thanks, KiwiCo!

Grandson and granddaughter love how easy they are to put together

Fun build!

Paper Circuits

My 11 yr old loved making the paper circuits. He was able to do it on his own & was very proud of the end result. The lights are very bright & the little lamps switch out easily from the base. Just pick it up & put on a different style.

The directions were great and the kids had no problem understanding them.

Easy to understand

It was fun having the different color options. It was easier than the other crates which my daughter liked she felt more like she could do it on her own.

Love color options

Quality was good. Plenty of supplies. And was cool for kids

Great quality

My daughter loved this one. Easy to follow and loved the interchangeability of the colors... I think she tried every combination and then had us vote on which color went best with each shape to compare opinions.

Color combinations!

I liked that the instructions were easy to understand and it taught me a lot on how circuits work.

Learning about circuits

My son enjoyed putting the circuits together.

Enjoyed assembly

It was difficult enough that it held his interest and kept him working at it in order to complete the project.

Nice challenge

My older grandsons loved it, they are 12 years old. My younger grandsons had some trouble understanding what to do they are 9 years old.

Great for grandsons

It was creative, well setup and had enough options in it.

Walking Robot

Great kit! The directions are clear and the video instruction is a really good addition to the kit. My grandson loves having a product he made himself and can play with again and again. Grandma loves that physics is integrated with play. A very fun and sturdy robot

12 year old loved it and was able to build it completely solo. It’s a great little project. Only 1 downside is it seems to lean to one side & not walk too far without a little prop up, but overall it’s great.

My son's favorite Tinker Crate so far! Although it was tough to choose, they are all amazing!

Granddaughter (age 8 years) loved it! However, she said she put it together in 7 minutes.

it was so easy to make it. It was so fun to build, but it was a little confusing to make, but I figured it out!

Putting together the robot was a great activity! It works well, and sparks a lot of questions. The one piece of constructive feedback I could give is the durability of the product. The first time the robot fell off the table the wood at the connection with the plastic leg bent, and began to crack. We noticed it wouldn't walk after that until we bent the plastic leg back into place, but the wood is very close to cracking. Aside from that I absolutely loved the product! The amount of background information included with the box and the zine made a very contextual and educational experience.

It worked great, but then the foot broke quickly. Not enough width around where the orange pegs connect.

I actually ordered it for my nephew's birthday. But my 6 year old daughter convinced me to give it to her. I was unsure whether it would be appropriate for her age or not. But I wanted to encourage her. And she did make her first robot. The instructions were really easy to follow for her.

My 7 yr old was able to build it completely by himself. It was a fun activity and he can’t wait to try the other robot ideas that came with it.

The grandkids, ages 10, 11, and 12, lived their boxes. The sense of accomplishment was an amazing reaction. I will be getting more in the future.
