Materials List

  1. construction paper
  2. hole punch
  3. scissors
  4. markers
  1. To prepare the puzzles, cut hearts out of construction paper. On one side, write a number (1-10) and on the other side, punch the corresponding number of holes with a hole puncher. (You could also just create dots with your markers.) Cut the hearts in half and you are ready to start.

  2. I tried to encourage him to put the numbers in order first and then match the hole punched sides to the numbers but he had a plan of his own.

  3. He wanted to count the hole punched side first and then find its number. Either way works and I've learned from experience to follow his lead during activities whenever possible.

  4. Here are some more ideas:
    1) Instead of hole punching the hearts, put the corresponding number of stickers on the other half.
    2) Hide the hearts around the room and put them together as you find them.
    3) Make each heart a different color for beginning counters.
    4) Let your preschooler punch the holes to match each number. They love to use the hole puncher and it is great for wrist strength.
