Is it possible to remove ice from a bowl without getting your hands wet? You can if you know the science behind it.....

Materials List

  1. ice
  2. bowl
  3. salt
  4. water
  5. string
  1. Have a friend you want to challenge? Hand your friend a piece of string, and tell 'em to get the ice out of the bowl without getting their hands wet!

  2. The first thing we had to do was put a bit of water in the bowl with the ice.

  3. We put the string in the bowl. Can we get the ice out?

  4. After leaving the string in for a minute or two and waiting, we pulled on the string. Anything? Nope! Nothin'.

  5. Hmmm. We put the string back in the bowl,

  6. added some salt, shaking it over the string....

  7. Madeleine had to get fancy, and ran off to get the timer...

  8. Waiting for about a minute....

  9. And will it work? Yes! So... is salt sticky? Magic? Not quite....

  10. The freezing point is lowered by the salt (freezing is usually 32 degrees), so the ice melted a little and trapped the string, and then refroze again! It wasn't the ice but the unusually cold water that was making our science seem like magic. Now you know the facts... Who are you going to challenge with your mad scientist skills?
