Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Gather your materials. Tie dyeing is messy, so be sure to protect your work space! You can use newspaper or paper bags.

  • Step 2

For the most common tie dye pattern, start by pinching your fabric in the center and twisting it up until it's gathered into a circle. Using pipe cleaners, tie off the fabric into sections--like a pie!

  • Step 3

Experiment with other designs. For a polka dot pattern, pinch the fabric in several places and tie each "dots" with pipe cleaners. For stripes, fold the fabric accordion style and tie sections with pipe cleaners.

  • Step 4

Whatever design you choose, apply liquid watercolor to each section. Then let it dry overnight.
