Masking Tape + Watercolor

Here's a simple technique that's sure to create a delightful result. Stick masking tape on paper in any pattern you like--we made the letter O. Then simply watercolor all over the paper!

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

    Place masking tape on paper in a desired pattern. The letter "O" is the example shown.

  • Step 2

    Watercolor paint all over the paper. As O started painting, he told me this was a Van Gogh: "It's a pretty famous painting." Then he added lighting bolts and his beloved bears, brown Baba and purple Sam.

  • Final result!

    When you're done and the paint is dry, carefully peel off the tape to reveal the shape. We gave our painting to Grandma and Grandpa!
