Wax Hearts

My favorite projects to do with my kids are the projects I remember from when I was a kid. Melting crayons with wax paper was a favorite craft when I was little. My kids had just as much fun as I did creating these pretty wax hearts.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

First, grab your supplies. You will need wax crayons with the paper wrappers removed. (We used random broken crayons.) You'll also need wax paper and an iron, as well as a pencil sharpener to create the wax shavings from the crayon.

  • Step 2

Use the pencil sharpener to sharpen the crayons. Use a little bowl to catch the shavings in since they can get a little messy.

  • Step 3

I folded a piece of wax paper in half so the kids could see where half the paper would be. Then they sprinkled the crayon shavings on half the wax paper. The shavings should be thin and spread out evenly.

Then fold the wax paper so the shavings are on the inside. You will iron the wax paper to melt the crayons, but first place a paper towel or cloth on the top and bottom of the wax paper. Then press with an iron moving the iron around so nothing burns.

Once the design cools, the kids can cut out their hearts. They are pretty taped to a window, or they could be strung together for decoration.
