Cardboard Castle

Upcycle a cardboard box into a castle with a drawbridge! Make the castle shown here, and then Invite your friends over to help make designs of your own.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

    Gather your materials.


  • Step 2

    Have an adult use scissors to cut notches into the flap of your box like this. This will become the roof of your castle.

  • Step 3

    Create a door by using your pencil to draw an archway on the front of the box.

  • Step 4

    Have an adult assistant use scissors to cut out the door. Be careful not to cut the bottom!

  • Step 5

    Make the door into a drawbridge by using the scissors (or a sharp pencil) to poke two small holes on either edge of the door. Use the same method to poke holes in the back of the box. Insert the two lengths of stretchy string from the holes in door to holes in the back of the box. Tie knots on all ends of the strings so they hold up the door.

  • Step 6

    Place your castle upright and draw the bridge in and out pulling the strings from the back of the box.

  • Final result!

    Paint your palace! Use the dowels and colorful paper to create banners and flags and other decorations. Once you finish the main castle, use other boxes to make additional ramparts.
