Roll out a piece of white clay. It should be pretty thin - one-eighth of an inch (3 mm) or less in thickness.

Use the circle shape cutter to cut a circle.

Roll a little ball of clay for the filling.

Fold the white clay over the clay filling.

Stick on wiggle eyes. Then make a mouth and cheeks with clay!

Open a jump ring. Then, attach it to an eye pin and keyring. You may need pliers for this part!

Make your own lanterns with yarn, a tea light, and a balloon!

Inflate your balloon to the size you want your lantern to be - we made ours about the size of two fists.

Fill a bowl with some glue. Then, dip the yarn in the glue and begin wrapping it around the balloon.

Make sure to leave an opening at the top of the balloon so you can put your tea candle in later.

Wrap the yarn around the balloon in a criss-cross fashion. Try to cover it evenly but leave a small opening around the knot of the balloon. We wrapped ours around 60 times.

Once you like the look of your balloon, cut the yarn and leave the balloon to dry. It needs about 10 hours to dry.

Now it's time to unveil your masterpiece! Use scissors to carefully cut the balloon.

Gently peel the balloon off of the yarn until it is completely removed. The yarn may lose its shape a bit during this process, but you can mold it back once the balloon is out!

Add some colorful tissue paper to the inside of your yarn lantern.

Add a tea light to light up your lantern and put it in a special spot!

Celebrate Chinese New Year with this fire-breathing dragon and learn about chambers that can produce strong currents of air just by squeezing them together! Download the printable <a href="http://images.kiwicrate.com/diy_ad/KiwiCo-Fire-breathing-Dragon-Printable.pdf">here</a>.

Dragons may be mythical, but this dragon bellows is based off something real — a tool called a bellows. And interestingly enough, bellows are used to get fires going, kind of like how this model gets the flames going in the dragon’s mouth! Fire needs three things to burn: heat, a fuel source, and oxygen. Oxygen is all around you in the air, so air is an easy source of oxygen for a fire. But a fire on its own, with a normal amount of air around it, will only burn so hot. What if you need it to burn hotter? It turns out, you just add more air! Instead of blowing out the fire, the added air brings extra oxygen, which increases the fire’s intensity and temperature. A bellows has been the way to add extra air (and oxygen) to a fire since ancient times. When you open a bellows, it sucks in air to fill itself up. Then when you squeeze it, it shoots that air out like a pump. By pumping a bellows over and over, ancient people could make fires hot enough to smelt iron out of ore, weld metals together, and craft strong metal alloys. Bellows are still used to this day. Get ready to pump some air and stoke your dragon’s flames with this fire-breathing project!

Then, fold and crease them towards the printed side of the paper.

Push the middle of the triangles on the short sides of the paper down and squeeze them together.

Continue doing this until you have a flat hexagonal shape.

Flatten out the printables and color them in. These will be your dragon’s scales.

Flip the printables over and color them! This will be the inside of your dragon’s mouth - make it look fire-y!

Fold along the dotted line towards the inside of the mouth. This is a tab.

Then, glue the tab to the other short side of the printable, connecting them and closing the circle.

Refold the printable again so that it looks like a flat hexagon. You made a bellow! 

Bellows produce strong currents of air through a chamber. When you expand the chamber, it draws in air. When you compress the chamber, it expels air.

Trace the bottom of one of the bellows onto a piece of cardboard. Then, cut it out.

Glue the cardboard to one end of one of the bellows.

Then, glue the other bellow to the open end of the first bellow.

Cut some ½-inch wide strips of tissue paper.

Decorate your dragon! We decorated our dragon with two eyes, a nostril, and some nostril flares.

Tape the strips of tissue paper to the inside of the dragon’s mouth.

Now, your dragon is ready to breathe fire! To make it breathe fire, just compress the bellows!

Part of being creative is taking something familiar and making it exciting.  So we made these felt fortune cookies to spread some love this Valentine's Day with little notes inside.

Adult prep: Before we got started I cut out a bunch of 4 in. felt circles. I just traced a lid that was 4 inches in diameter on the felt and then cut them out.

 I also cut the pipe cleaners into pieces that were slightly smaller than 4 inches long.

Then, my 3-year-old Clare took charge and started gluing the pipe cleaners on the felt circles. We made sure that they went through the center and did not hang over the edges. Then we let them dry.

Next, we folded the felt circle in half (like a taco.)

Then we bent the pipe cleaner, which is on the inside of the felt circle, and formed it into a fortune cookie shape. She thought this was pretty funny.

The final step is to cut out small fortune cookie size pieces of white paper and write a short nice message on them. Then we inserted them into the cookies. You could also add tiny toys if you wanted.
