Impress your friends and family with this simple, quick, and super-cool 'egg in a bottle'&nbsp;science trick! You'll learn how to harness the power of expanding and contracting gasses to suck an egg into a bottle in which it would never normally fit.Discover everything that eggs have to offer with <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/us/store/dp/eggsperiments-project-kit/2979">Eggsperiments</a> from the <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/store">KiwiCo Store</a>! Gather the materials for your egg-in-a-bottle experiment!

Carefully peel the shell off your hard-boiled egg. The smoother your egg, the better this experiment will work!

With some parent help, light the end of the strip of paper and place it inside the jar.

a34058ac1bf7f.jpg

Quickly place the egg on top of the jar before the paper burns out. If you look closely, you should be able to see the egg vibrate ever so slightly as the paper burns.

a723f940f27bc.jpg

The flame will quickly go out, and when it does, don't blink! Your egg should start to compress and will get sucked down into the bottle. Ta-da! You've successfully managed to get your egg in the bottle. So what's happening? As the flame burns inside the bottle, it heats up the air around it, causing it to expand. If you saw your egg vibrating slightly, this was because the air was escaping from the bottle. When the flame goes out, the air in the bottle cools and shrinks. This is what sucks your egg into the bottle! To get your egg out of the bottle, simply cut it into a couple of smaller chunks by poking it with a knife. Then tip the jar to dump out the pieces.

Is a square egg possible? Not in nature - but you can re-shape a hard-boiled egg in just a few easy steps!Discover everything that eggs have to offer with <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/us/store/dp/eggsperiments-project-kit/2979">Eggsperiments</a> from the <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/store">KiwiCo Store</a>! Use the scientific method with a series of egg-based experiments that explore chemistry, physics, and biology.

When you hard boil an egg, molecular chemistry is at work. Eggs are made up mostly of two kinds of molecules: protein and water. The proteins in a raw egg are like twisted and folded strings, floating in a watery soup. They’re held that way by weak chemical bonds within the protein (and by the water, which pushes on different parts of the protein).
When you heat up the egg, though, the proteins start moving and shaking. They shake so much that they break their weak bonds and unfold. As they unfold, the proteins end up making new, stronger chemical bonds between each other. That turns the egg into a latticework of protein, with water trapped in between. This is what’s going on when the boiled egg turns from transparent to white.

Once the boiled egg cools down, the proteins settle and the bonds solidify to make the rubbery egg we’re familiar with. When they’re still hot, though, the bonds between the proteins are moldable, kind of like clay. What would happen, then, if you molded an egg before it cooled down? Try it out in this project and see for yourself!

Make a 1 ½-inch square box out of the cereal box. Fold it together inside out, so the waxy outside of the cereal box is on the inside. Tape the box together.

a285037a1d306.jpg

Place two eggs in the bottom of the pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 10 minutes. Then, remove from heat. You may need a grown-up to assist you.

Use the slotted spoon to remove one egg from the pot, and set it aside. Then, remove the second egg and use paper towels to peel it.

The eggs will be very hot! Be careful when handling them.

Dip the peeled egg back in the pot to remove any remaining egg shell.

Have you ever grown your own crystal geodes? Try this egg experiment and grow your very own borax crystals in a shell! Experiment with different borax concentrations and see how big your egg geodes can grow.&nbsp;Discover everything that eggs have to offer with <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/us/store/dp/eggsperiments-project-kit/2979" target="_self">Eggsperiments</a> from the <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/store">KiwiCo Store</a>! Use the scientific method with a series of egg-based experiments that explore chemistry, physics, and biology.

Borax (sodium tetraborate) is a naturally-occurring mineral salt commonly used as a laundry booster or cleaner. As with any other cleaning product, it should be kept away from children not under direct supervision of an adult. Do not allow children to ingest Borax. If consumed, contact a poison control center immediately. Wash hands after play, as prolonged skin exposure may cause irritation.

a0beb383d0679.jpg

Start by preparing your borax solution. Add 4 tablespoons of borax and 1 cup of water to a jar. Microwave the solution in 30-second intervals, stirring after each internal. After about 2 1/2 minutes (or 5 intervals) the borax should be completely dissolved. You can always microwave the solution for a few more seconds or add a tablespoon of water, if the borax is not yet dissolved. &nbsp;

The jar and solution will be very hot. Be careful when taking it out of the microwave!

aba5f6224f3ec.jpg

While your crystal solution is cooling down, start preparing the eggshells. We cracked the top portion of the egg open and removed the egg to make little egg cups for our geodes.&nbsp;

You'll want to rinse out the inside of the egg to get rid of all the egg white.

a5805ad9a4581.jpg

Brush some glue on the inside the eggshell, and then sprinkle borax inside the shell. Pour out any excess borax. Next, wait for the glue to dry. The borax coating inside the egg will act as starting "seeds" for crystallizing the borax solution.

acb30d6ac85f7.jpg

Fill a cup with crystal solution and add a few drops of food coloring. You'll need enough crystal solution in the glass to fully submerge the eggshell. If you have enough crystal solution, you can make multiple colors of crystal solution.

a3302382c5e69.jpg

Once the eggshell is dry and the water is room temperature, gently lower it into the crystal solution. Let it sit overnight or until your crystals have reached the size you want. If you want more crystals, you can mix up a new batch of the borax solution and drop the egg into the new solution.

a8710313cec75.jpg

Once you are satisfied with the size of the crystals, carefully take out the shell and place on a paper towel to dry. When your egg geode is&nbsp;dry, you can put it on display to amaze your friends and family!

Want to see a chemical reaction in action? With this egg in vinegar experiment, we observed and followed a regular egg through a transformation to become a bouncy egg. You can too with just a few repurposed ingredients you may have around the house for Easter! This experiment allows you to see how two common household materials react — eggshell and vinegar. When these materials come in contact, a (safe) chemical reaction takes place and creates new compounds. This easy experiment is great for children to do on their own, and fun to observe how the egg changes over time.Want to explore more kitchen science experiments? Explore the tastier side of learning with <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/us/store/dp/science-of-cooking-ice-cream-project-kit/5461" target="_self">Science of Cooking: Ice Cream</a> from the <a href="https://www.kiwico.com/store" target="_self">KiwiCo Store</a>!

Carefully put your egg into a jar and fill the jar about three-quarters full with the egg completely submerged in the vinegar.

a4e15ef59deab.jpg

You should be able to see bubbles form around the egg immediately. Where do you think they come from? Wait 48 to 72 hours. We found it exciting to check in on the egg as we went as the egg grows and changes over time.

acc17e7dbb04c.jpg

After waiting, use a spoon to take out the egg. Carefully rinse it thoroughly under the faucet using warm water.

a450caf19e2c4.jpg

Your egg is now ready to bounce! Hold your egg about 3 inches from the table and gently let go. If bounced too hard the egg will break. This means you'll get to see the membrane of the egg!

acfb4a36801d1.jpg

Compare your transformed egg to a regular egg. What do you think happened to the eggshell? What other differences can you observe? What's Going On? If you look closely at the egg while it's submerged in the vinegar, you can see bubbles forming on the surface. Those bubbles are full of carbon dioxide, just like the bubbles in a glass of soda. You're seeing a reaction between a compound in the eggshell (calcium carbonate) and an acid in the vinegar (acetic acid). This reaction creates carbon dioxide (and some other things) and breaks down the eggshell in the process. The membrane underneath the shell doesn't react, so it's left behind. Once the shell is completely gone, all that's left is the flexible membrane, giving you a bouncy "rubber" egg!

This Easter, we wanted to change up our typical egg dyeing project. Using all natural ingredients as dye, we created mini little Steve eggs to help celebrate the holiday. To keep him company, Cricket decided to join the fun too! <a href="https://icdn.kiwico.com/diy_ad/Kiwi-Crate-Steve-Easter-Egg-Printable.pdf" target="_blank">Download our printable here!</a>

Prep: To achieve Steve's peach shade, brew black coffee to serve as the egg's natural dye. For Cricket's greenish blue color, create a cabbage dye. First chop cabbage, and then boil the cabbage in 1 quart of water. Once boiling, bring the mixture to a simmer, cover it, and let it simmer for 30 minutes.

af9c2866ad02c.jpg

Once the natural dyes are ready, use a spoon to carefully place the hard boiled eggs into dye and let them set for 30 minutes. Remove the eggs and let them dry.

To create Steve and a little Kiwi Crate box for him to rest on, download the <a href="https://icdn.kiwico.com/diy_ad/Kiwi-Crate-Steve-Easter-Egg-Printable.pdf" target="_blank">printable</a>, print it out, and cut out the shapes. To make the crate, fold along the lines, slot the two ends together, and tape it closed. To make Steve, cut out the beak, wings, and feet, and fold along the lines. Glue these down on the egg to make Steve. Use a permanent marker to draw on Steve's eyes. Place Steve onto the Kiwi Crate box.

ae85215cdae5c.jpg

Repeat the steps to make a little Cricket Crate for your Cricket egg.To make Cricket's arms and legs and antennas, knot string and measure out 1 inch and cut. Repeat tying knots and cutting until you have 8 pieces of knotted string. Glue the end of each piece to the egg. Use two for the antennas, four for the arms, and another two for the legs. Use a marker to draw the eyes and mouth. Place Cricket into her crate alongside Steve.

Does an egg sink or float in water? What if it does both? In this experiment, make an egg sink and float at the same time!

ac457da66f8bc.jpg

ac9e7819dfaf6.jpg

Fill the jar about halfway with warm water. Then, add salt until it no longer dissolves when mixed.

a67095d21098e.jpg

Carefully put in the egg. Your egg should float to the top of the water!

af31954fc6e5f.jpg

Hold a spoon upside down over the jar and pour warm water over it. Fill up the jar the rest of the way. The egg stays in the same place!

a0bf3da7f0232.jpg

The salt water is saturated with the salt, which makes it more dense. The egg is less dense than the salt water, so the it floats to the top. When the fresh water is poured into the jar, it also floats above the salt water. However, the water on its own is less dense than the egg, so the egg doesn’t move. The egg floats at the top of the salt water, but sinks below the fresh water! Cool! Experiment further with a hard boiled egg!
