Carefully peel the shell off your hard-boiled egg. The smoother your egg, the better this experiment will work!

With some parent help, light the end of the strip of paper and place it inside the jar.

Quickly place the egg on top of the jar before the paper burns out. If you look closely, you should be able to see the egg vibrate ever so slightly as the paper burns.

The flame will quickly go out, and when it does, don't blink! Your egg should start to compress and will get sucked down into the bottle. Ta-da! You've successfully managed to get your egg in the bottle. So what's happening? As the flame burns inside the bottle, it heats up the air around it, causing it to expand. If you saw your egg vibrating slightly, this was because the air was escaping from the bottle. When the flame goes out, the air in the bottle cools and shrinks. This is what sucks your egg into the bottle! To get your egg out of the bottle, simply cut it into a couple of smaller chunks by poking it with a knife. Then tip the jar to dump out the pieces.

Is a square egg possible? When you hard boil an egg, molecular chemistry is at work. Eggs are made up mostly of two kinds of molecules: protein and water. The proteins in a raw egg are like twisted and folded strings, floating in a watery soup. They’re held that way by weak chemical bonds within the protein (and by the water, which pushes on different parts of the protein).
 When you heat up the egg, though, the proteins start moving and shaking. They shake so much that they break their weak bonds and unfold. As they unfold, the proteins end up making new, stronger chemical bonds between each other. That turns the egg into a latticework of protein, with water trapped in between. This is what’s going on when the boiled egg turns from transparent to white.
 
Once the boiled egg cools down, the proteins settle and the bonds solidify to make the rubbery egg we’re familiar with. When they’re still hot, though, the bonds between the proteins are moldable, kind of like clay. What would happen, then, if you molded an egg before it cooled down? Try it out in this project and see for yourself!

Make a 1 ½-inch square box out of the cereal box. Fold it together inside out, so the waxy outside of the cereal box is on the inside. Tape the box together.

Place two eggs in the bottom of the pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 10 minutes. Then, remove from heat. You may need a grown-up to assist you.

Use the slotted spoon to remove one egg from the pot, and set it aside. Then, remove the second egg and use paper towels to peel it. 

The eggs will be very hot! Be careful when handling them. 

Dip the peeled egg back in the pot to remove any remaining egg shell.

Place the peeled egg into the box, pointy end down.

Carefully close the box and wrap a rubber band around it. Then, leave the box in the refrigerator for about 2 hours.

After two hours, take the box out of the refrigerator. Remove the rubber band, and take out the egg.

Peel the first egg. Then, cut into both eggs and compare them! What other shapes can you make?

Cut one leg off of the pair of pantyhose. Then, cut the leg in half.

Make a small hole about one third of the way down the container with the scissors. Then, make a second hole on the opposite side of the container. 

If you’re having trouble making the hole, make a tiny hole with a pushpin first!

Place an egg in the middle of the cut piece of pantyhose. Then, tie a knot on either side of the egg.

Put the pantyhose egg into the container. Pull one end of the pantyhose through one corner hole. Then, pull the other end through the other hole.

Pull the pantyhose tight and tie a knot on either end of the pantyhose that’s sticking out of the container.

Screw the lid on and take your box to a second story window. Then, drop it! Did your egg survive the landing?

If your egg broke, try using a bigger container! 

When an egg drops from a second-story window, it picks up 32 feet/second&nbsp;(10 meters/second) of speed for every second it falls . By the time the egg reaches the ground, it’s going at about 24 miles per hour (37 km/h).&nbsp;And then, suddenly, its speed drops to 0 (usually along with a big SPLAT). The fall itself doesn’t crack the egg — it’s the stopping that’s the problem. When the egg hits the ground and stops, its speed changes very quickly. In physics terms, the egg has a high acceleration. The more acceleration the egg has, the more force it feels from the impact. So, a sudden change in speed means a lot of force.&nbsp;

But the reverse is also true: the less acceleration the egg has, the less force it feels from hitting the ground. If there’s a way to slow down how quickly the egg’s speed drops to 0 miles per hour, then it can&nbsp;survive the fall AND the stop at the end.&nbsp; 
The contraption above is one of many different kinds you can build to achieve this goal. Some contraptions suspend the egg with something elastic like this one. Some are all about padding. Others even use parachutes! What else could you try?

Pour some vinegar into a jar. Make sure you have enough to cover your egg.

Place your egg into the jar and close the lid.

Now you'lll have to wait for 3-4 days for the bouncy egg to be ready! You should start to see the eggshell fizz. Check back to see the progress of your bouncy egg.

Time to play! Drop your egg 3-5 inches from the table. What happens? If you drop it from a higher spot, your bouncy egg may burst! If this happens, you can take a look at the membrane that was holding the egg together.

Borax (sodium tetraborate) is a naturally-occurring mineral salt commonly used as a laundry booster or cleaner. As with any other cleaning product, it should be kept away from children not under direct supervision of an adult. Do not allow children to ingest Borax. If consumed, contact a poison control center immediately. Wash hands after play, as prolonged skin exposure may cause irritation.

Start by preparing your borax solution. Add 4 tablespoons of borax and 1 cup of water to a jar. Microwave the solution in 30-second intervals, stirring after each internal. After about 2 1/2 minutes (or 5 intervals) the borax should be completely dissolved. You can always microwave the solution for a few more seconds or add a tablespoon of water, if the borax is not yet dissolved. &nbsp;

The jar and solution will be very hot. Be careful when taking it out of the microwave!

While your crystal solution is cooling down, start preparing the eggshells. We cracked the top portion of the egg open and removed the egg to make little egg cups for our geodes.&nbsp;

You'll want to rinse out the inside of the egg to get rid of all the egg white.

Brush some glue on the inside the eggshell, and then sprinkle borax inside the shell. Pour out any excess borax. Next, wait for the glue to dry. The borax coating inside the egg will act as starting "seeds" for crystallizing  the borax solution.

Fill a cup with crystal solution and add a few drops of food coloring. You'll need enough crystal solution in the glass to fully submerge the eggshell. If you have enough crystal solution, you can make multiple colors of crystal solution.

Once the eggshell is dry and the water is room temperature, gently lower it into the crystal solution. Let it sit overnight or until your crystals have reached the size you want. If you want more crystals, you can mix up a new batch of the borax solution and drop the egg into the new solution.

Once you are satisfied with the size of the crystals, carefully take out the shell and place on a paper towel to dry. When your egg geode is&nbsp;dry, you can put it on display to amaze your friends and family!

Want to see a chemical reaction in action? With this egg in vinegar experiment, we observed and followed a regular egg through a transformation to become a bouncy egg. You can too with just a few repurposed ingredients you may have around the house for Easter! This experiment allows you to see how two common household materials react — eggshell and vinegar. When these materials come in contact, a (safe) chemical reaction takes place and creates new compounds. Carefully put your egg into a jar and fill the jar about three-quarters full with the egg completely submerged in the vinegar.

 You should be able to see bubbles form around the egg immediately. Where do you think they come from? Wait 48 to 72 hours. We found it exciting to check in on the egg as we went as the egg grows and changes over time.

After waiting, use a spoon to take out the egg. Carefully rinse it thoroughly under the faucet using warm water.

Your egg is now ready to bounce! Hold your egg about 3 inches from the table and gently let go. If bounced too hard the egg will break. This means you'll get to see the membrane of the egg!

Compare your transformed egg to a regular egg. What do you think happened to the eggshell? What other differences can you observe? What's Going On? If you look closely at the egg while it's submerged in the vinegar, you can see bubbles forming on the surface. Those bubbles are full of carbon dioxide, just like the bubbles in a glass of soda. You're seeing a reaction between a compound in the eggshell (calcium carbonate) and an acid in the vinegar (acetic acid). This reaction creates carbon dioxide (and some other things) and breaks down the eggshell in the process. The membrane underneath the shell doesn't react, so it's left behind. Once the shell is completely gone, all that's left is the flexible membrane, giving you a bouncy "rubber" egg!

Egg in Vinegar Experiment

This is an oldie, but a goodie -- a super fun project to create beautiful decorations for a festive Spring or Easter table.  Do note: it's pretty messy (ie., our fingers got pretty much covered in glue), so you might want to plan accordingly and cover your counter or table before you begin, and have some wet paper towels ready.  And I have to say, the mess is worth it -- we were really amazed at how great these turned out.

Blow up your balloons.  Remember, the size of your balloon will be the size of your egg -- so unless you're thinking of ostrich eggs, you don't need them to be too big.  (Do you have one of these balloon-pumper things?  They're awesome, in case you ever find yourself needing a ton of balloons for a birthday or a project like this or this.)

Measure and cut strands of your embroidery thread.  We used strands about 2 feet long.  Depending on how thickly you want to cover your balloon, you will need 10-15 strands of thread.

Pour a few tablespoons of glue into the cup.

Dip the first strand of thread into the glue.  Holding the thread over the cup of glue, pull the thread through your finger and thumb to spread the glue along the whole length of the thread. (This is where it will get messy!  But my daughter LOVED it, and I got to show her how fun it is to rub glue on your hands, let it dry and peel it off!  Weird, I know.  Did anyone else ever do that??)

Wrap the thread over the balloon, covering as much space as you can.

Repeat steps #4 & 5 with more thread, until you have covered as much of the balloon as you would like.  Note: the more you have covered the balloon, the sturdier your egg will be.  S also decided to paint more glue on the balloon after the thread was on; not sure this is a required step, but I thought it might help reinforce the structure.
