gratitude project

pumpkin

craft

handmade

My daughter brought home a pumpkin similar to this one from school. We loved the concept. So, as a family, we decided that we would each create a pumpkin of gratitude to explicitly recognize that we have so much to be thankful for. We are truly fortunate. This project is simple, but it turns out beautifully. I hope that we continue making pumpkins of gratitude as a tradition in years to come.Want to explore more kitchen science experiments? Cut strips from the orange paper. Also, cut out your pumpkin's leaves and vines.

On each strip, write down something that you are grateful for. Make sure that you leave a little room on the ends of the strips without writing.

Now you are ready to create the body of your pumpkin. Gather up the strips at one end and spread them evenly around the ends where they are gathered. Tape, glue, or staple them in place.

Then, bring the strips around and gather the other ends at one point. Tape, glue, or staple them in place.

We suggest curling your vines with scissors. Then, tape your leaves and vines onto the top of your pumpkin.

There you have your pumpkin of gratitude. I plan to use ours on our Thanksgiving table setting, but my kids seem to have other plans. My kids noticed that they have a nice springy bounce to them when you push the tops down a bit. They are also fans of throwing and catching their pumpkins in a game of catch. So the pumpkins might not survive until Thanksgiving. I guess we will simply make more!

Learn how to hand sew while making a Hanukkah-themed wall hanging!

Draw a menorah, candles, and flames onto your felt scraps in whichever colors you want. Then, cut them out.

Position the felt cutouts onto the large felt rectangle. Then, use pins to secure them in place.

adbe438404a58.jpg

Thread the needle! Tie a loop knot on one end of your embroidery thread. Poke the other end through the eye of the needle.

a14a31875b99e.jpg

Poke the needle up through the back of the felt until it hits the knot. You should be going through two layers (the large felt rectangle and one of the felt cutouts).

a68d62ef8ff6a.jpg

Poke the needle back through the front of the felt.

ac76f8e1789d5.jpg

Continue doing this until you have reached the end of the cutout. Then, turn the felt over and tie a loop knot as close to the felt as possible.

ac2ddb2fdb87d.jpg

Repeat steps 4 through 7 until you have sewed all of the cutouts to the large felt rectangle.

If you want to “light” your hanging menorah as you would with real candles, remember not to sew on all of the flames just yet! Keep them somewhere safe and then sew one flame onto the menorah each night of Hanukkah. By the end, you’re guaranteed to be a hand sewing pro!

Fold down the top ½ (1.3 cm) inch of the large felt rectangle and sew it closed the same way you sewed the cutouts onto the felt rectangle.

Tape the skewers together to make one big skewer. Then, insert it into the opening at the top of the felt rectangle.

Tie a piece of embroidery floss to both ends of the skewer.

I love homemade t-shirts, especially when they are of my children's art creations. These geometric prints came out so cute that we started making them as gifts. This craft is wonderful because not only can children stamp the shirt, but they create the stamp themselves with foam. I just love that!

c2cb6924075f.jpg

You can use foam sheets (thicker ones) or a new kitchen sponge to have your child cut shapes out for the stamp. Next, glue the shapes onto a wooden base to create their stamp. We used part of an old frame to do this step.

827f1425d098.jpg

This project was great because it was two crafts in one. We made the stamp one day and set it outside to dry completely. The next day we got to work on the t-shirt.

8d287e56c857.jpg

Your child can customize this shirt by painting the paint right onto the stamp.

Stamping is pretty fun for kids. My daughter thought this was the best part, especially when she lifted her stamp to reveal the beautiful creation she made.

106fc6f1518d.jpg

We thought the t-shirt came out so cute that we decided a gift for a new baby cousin arriving any day now was a must!

After you are done with the craft, you are left not only with a cute new t-shirt, but also a pretty cool stamp that can be used over and over again. I may need to make myself a tribal t-shirt soon!
