Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Trace your child's hand, or have them trace their own onto white construction paper or card stock. Keep the fingers together while tracing. Cut out the hand or have your child cut it out.

  • Step 2

I drew the stripes of the flag on the hand shape as well as the square with stars in it to resemble the American flag. If your child is older, encourage him to draw his own stripes and stars. This craft would work with any state or country flag.

  • Step 3

It was the perfect time to talk about making a pattern (red, white, red, white). You could also use star stickers instead of drawing stars in the blue square.

  • Final result!

Wrap the end of the handprint around the top of a straw and tape it closed. She had so much fun making and playing with this flag! It would also be a cute party center piece or decoration.
