Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1
We gathered our materials and put on aprons for some fun, hands-on messy art! I set the oven at 325 degrees to warm up for our cotton "eggs."
Step 2
My daughter mixed the flour and water, then poured the mixture into three smaller bowls. She is thrilled about anything that involves mixing!
Step 3
She made each one a different color with a drop or two of food coloring.
Step 4
The kids got busy dunking the cotton balls into the bowls to coat them with flour goo. They had fun swirling the colors together, and got their hands nice and bright too. Once we had our foil-lined tray full of rainbow-colored "eggs," I put them in the oven for about 35 minutes until they became hard.
Step 5
When the "eggs" were finished cooking, the colors became really vivid. I let them cool down and then handed them off to my kids, along with a few tools to explore with.
Final result!
My kids didn't know what to expect or what to do for that matter, but they quickly found ways to crack them open! They thought it was very cool to find the cotton still soft and fluffy inside. They became all sorts of new characters during their discovery playtime.
