Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1
Gather your materials.

Step 2
Break a wax candle up into chunks.

Step 3
Melt the candle. You can melt it in a pot over a stove or by microwaving it in a microwave safe measuring cup.

Step 4
Remove the wick and cut it into small pieces.

Step 5
Use a measuring cup, or any cup with a spout, to carefully pour the melted wax into an acorn cap.

Warning
Be very careful when handling hot wax. Have a grown-up on hand to pour the wax and always proceed with caution to avoid wax burns.
Step 6
Stand a wick piece in the center of the acorn cap.

Step 7
Allow the wax to cool completely to finish your candle.

Step 8
Make as many acorn candles as you want, then add them to a bowl of water and light for a lovely autumn candle display.

An acorn might look like a simple, polished nut in a tiny wooden cap, but it’s actually a complete survival kit for a baby oak tree! Wrapped inside that hard outer shell is a plant embryo packed with rich fats, starches, and nutrients to power its initial growth. Because acorns are heavy and drop straight down beneath their parent tree's shady canopy, oak trees rely on hungry squirrels and birds to act as their personal delivery service. Animals collect and bury thousands of acorns underground as a winter food stash, but since they forget where many of them are hidden, those forgotten nuts get the perfect dark, moist environment to sprout roots in the spring and grow into towering oaks!
