Discovering Sound Matters

We have lots of favorite experiments and demonstrations that we love to play with... and this is absolutely one of them! Who knew that sound has physical matter?!? Now, before I go on, a word of caution--this project is for older kids only, since the experiment involves using a candle.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

  • Step 2

Madeleine drew a penny-sized hole on our lid, near the center. (We figured we'd just put a piece of tape over it when we returned our oats!)

  • Step 4

  • Final result!

We put the bowl and candle next to the oats box, and then Maddie held onto the box with one hand, and gave the bottom a sharp 'Tap!' with the other. The vibration (sound waves) traveled through the container, and out the small hole.... and put out the candle! Wow!! Let's do that again! And now again!....
