Water Squirter

A squirt gun is a a great example of what happens when you apply pressure to a liquid. In this quick, fun experiment, learn how to make your own miniature water squirter using just two cups, a straw, and some clay!

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

    Gather your materials!

  • Step 2

    Cut one of the plastic cups in half. Cut two small slits on the sides of the bottom half. This will be the plunger.

  • Step 3

    Use a pencil to poke a small hole in the bottom of the other cup.

  • Step 4

    Push the straw through the hole. Curve the bendy part up.

  • Step 5

    Press putty or clay around the straw to seal up the hole.

  • Step 6

    Hold your finger over the end of the straw and pour water into the cup

  • Step 7

    Angle the cup so that when you take your finger off the straw, no water comes out.

  • Step 8

    Hold the plunger by the bottom and quickly push it into the cup. As you push the plunger in, you'll see a squirt of water come out of the straw!

  • Tip

    The cut slits in the plunger will help the cup flex as it goes inside the main cup. This will help the water squirt better!
