Make a Fall Sensory Bin
Turn oats and mini pumpkins into a fall sensory bin your kids can dig through for hours. Find 5-10 items and set aside 15 minutes for this seasonal activity.
Materials you'll need
- Sensory bin or table (with stand)
- Quick oats, enough to cover the bottom of the bin
- Popcorn kernels
- Small decorative pumpkin or gourd cup
- Small wooden scoop
- Jack-o'-lantern bowl or dish
- Metal tongs
- Red paper shred
- Cinnamon sticks
- Mini decorative pumpkins
- Small bird or animal figurine
- Measuring cup or scoop (clips to the bin edge)
- Extra scoops, like an extra cup or a slotted spoon
Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1: Pour the quick oats into the sensory bin and spread them out to cover the bottom. This is the base your kids will scoop, pour, and dig through.Step 2: Fill the small pumpkin-shaped cup with popcorn kernels and nestle it into the oats, along with the wooden scoop, so the kernels become their own mini digging zone.
Step 3: Fill the jack-o'-lantern bowl with red paper shred and set the metal tongs beside it for a pincer-grip challenge.
Step 4: Scatter the mini pumpkins and cinnamon sticks across the top of the oats.
Step 5: Tuck in a bird or animal figurine to bring a little nature into the scene.
Step 6: Clip a measuring cup to the rim of the bin and add extra scoops nearby, like a cup or slotted spoon, so kids have plenty of ways to explore.

Every part of this bin is secretly a fine motor skills workout. When you pinch the tongs to grab a mini pumpkin or twist your wrist to pour oats from cup to cup, you're strengthening the same small hand muscles you'll use to write your name or zip up a jacket. Switching between textures, smooth oats, crunchy popcorn kernels, and rough cinnamon sticks, also gives your sense of touch new information to sort through, which helps your brain get better at handling all kinds of textures. The best part? All that scooping and pouring still just feels like play.If you don't have a weather-resistant, kid-height table at home for this kind of messy sensory play, check out the Water and Sand Sensory Table. It gives kids a durable surface built just for digging, scooping, and pouring, and it disassembles for easy storage between sessions.
