Sandy Beach Slime

Materials you'll need

  • Medium bowl
  • Clear liquid glue
  • Fine sand
  • Borax (activator) ⚠️ See safety note below

  • Small blue beads and a mini paper umbrella, for decorating (optional)
 

*Safety note

Borax can irritate skin, especially with prolonged contact or for kids with eczema or sensitive skin. If you'd like to use a lower-concentration alternative, swap the borax/warm water mixture for a contact lens solution activator: mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda into the glue-water mixture, then slowly add contact lens solution one tablespoon at a time, stirring as you go, until the slime comes together. Check the label. It needs to list boric acid or sodium borate as an ingredient, or it won't work. Note that contact lens solution contains borax derivatives at a much lower concentration, so it's gentler but not entirely borax-free. Either way, wash hands after playing and keep slime away from eyes and mouths.

Heads up: swapping the activator may change how your slime turns out. Different concentrations can affect stretchiness and texture, so results may vary.

Step-by-step tutorial

Step 1: Pour clear glue into your bowl.

Step 2: Sprinkle in your sand.

Step 3: Stir the glue and sand together until the color turns an even, sandy tan.

Step 4: Slowly add the borax/warm water mixture and stir until the mixture pulls together into a stretchy blob of slime.

Step 5: Mix again — you'll see the mixture start to pull away from the sides of the bowl and clump together.

Step 6: Knead the slime with your hands until it's smooth and stretchy instead of sticky. Try pulling it up into a long strand.

Step 7 (optional): Flatten your slime into a round "island," then press blue beads into one side to look like sparkling water and add a tiny umbrella for a mini beach scene.

This slime works thanks to polymers — long, spaghetti-like chains of molecules found in the glue. In liquid form, those chains slide right past each other, which is why glue pours and drips. When you add the activator, it links neighboring chains together into a stretchy, tangled network, called cross-linking. That's the exact moment runny glue turns into stretchy, moldable slime. As for the sand, it doesn't change any of that chemistry. Instead, it just gets trapped between the polymer chains, giving your slime a fun, gritty, beach-like texture without affecting how it stretches.
