Our Founding Story

We believe that creative confidence helps kids think Big and act like creators and producers instead of just consumers. I had a deep appreciation for the creative, hands-on projects that encourage this kind of thinking, but as a parent I often found that my best intentions fell short. It was tough to find the time to do the research and come up with a great idea, let alone gather all the materials.

KiwiCo was created to celebrate kids' natural creativity and curiosity, while helping parents who want to bring enriching experiences to their children. We want to make it fun, easy, and delightful for families to spend time building, exploring and creating together. And, ultimately, we hope that the problem solving skills and creative confidence that kids gain today will help them tackle the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

Since its inception, the KiwiCo team has grown. We've added creative designers who dream up the projects, valued experts who review them, and a community of kid testers who keeps us on our toes and ensures the projects are fun and engaging. We’re excited to have the opportunity to deliver these experiences to the creative kids in your life!

Cynthia Lu

Background:
BS in Electrical Engineering at MIT, Masters in Industrial Design at RISD. I also competed on seasons 1 & 2 of Battlebots with Team Overhaul, and worked on Evergate, a puzzle platformer video game, with 3 other friends!
Your “why:”
I love seeing how my designs spark inspiration in kids, from their suggestions of extra features to cool ways they use our crates to play! I feel like I'm helping the next generation of designers realize their own talents!
Favorite KiwiCo crate:
This was tough to decide! Of all time, one of my top favorites is the Stereo Headphones - I still use mine! Of the ones I've designed, it's got to be the Delivery bot, the first crate I worked on from beginning to end!

Barley Forsman

Background:
I began my journey in architecture, graphic design, and fine arts before falling in love with industrial design, ultimately earning my BFA from CCA in San Francisco. Driven by a passion for cycling and the outdoors, I spent years designing hydration gear, technical accessories, and bikes—even founding my own bicycle business which I ran for seven years. For the past eight years, I've been channeling that entrepreneurial and design expertise into KiwiCo, sharing my love for STEM and engineering with the next generation of makers.
Your “why:”
I've always loved solving complex problems and trying to leave the world a little better than I found it. I feel immensely grateful every day that I get to use my creativity for that exact purpose.
Favorite KiwiCo crate:
My favorite crate is always the one I'm working on right now. The true joy and accomplishment for me lie entirely in the journey of creation.
Best part of designing at KiwiCo:
I get to learn something new every day. Each project is a fresh opportunity to become a mini-expert on a different STEM concept, which I then get to pass along to our young builders. It's easily some of the most rewarding work of my career.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

The kids!

Before our projects are sent out into the world, they have to pass through our toughest critics.

Every project goes through multiple rounds of gathering frank feedback from lots of kids. No crate leaves The Innovation Factory without a wide-eyed, “WHOA, AWESOME!”
