5 Fun Facts About Spain

Sep 9, 2026 / By Steve

Spain gave the world flamenco, gazpacho, and a church that took 144 years to build. The country is also where a curious eight-year-old made one of the biggest discoveries in the history of art. Here are five of our favorite facts about Spain.

An Eight-Year-Old Found the World's Most Famous Cave Paintings

In 1879, an amateur archaeologist named Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola was digging around the floor of a cave in northern Spain called Altamira, looking for old bones and stone tools. His daughter María, who was eight, wandered deeper into the cave and looked up, which her father hadn't thought to do. She found a ceiling covered in bison. Artists painted those bison in red, black, and violet about 14,000 years ago. Some of the older marks in the same cave are more than 35,000 years old, which means people kept coming back to paint here for over twenty thousand years. When Sautuola shared what María found, other scientists refused to believe him; they didn't think Stone Age people could paint that well. In 1902, the scientist who had doubted him most wrote a public apology and told the world he had been wrong.

A Church That Took 144 Years to Build

In 1882, workers in Barcelona laid the first stone of a church called the Sagrada Família. A 31-year-old architect named Antoni Gaudí took over the design a year later and spent the next four decades on it, drawing stone columns that branch overhead like trees in a forest. He knew he would never see it finished, so he concentrated on getting one whole side of the church done, as a guide for the builders who came after him. They kept going for another hundred years. In February 2026, a crane lifted a hundred-ton cross onto the tallest tower, and the church topped out at 566 feet, taller than any other church on Earth and nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and its pedestal. One hundred years to the day after Gaudí died, Barcelona celebrated the finish.

A Language Related to Nothing Else on Earth

In Basque Country, which spreads across northern Spain and southwestern France, people speak Euskara. Spanish, French, English, Russian, and Hindi are all distant cousins, because they grew out of one ancient language. Euskara didn't. You can hear it in the counting: three is tres in Spanish, trois in French, three in English, and teen in Hindi, and in Euskara it's hiru. Try one more. The word for dog is txakur, and that "tx" sounds like the "ch" in "chair". Linguists have compared Euskara with language after language and come up empty. They call it a language isolate, a language with no known living relatives anywhere, spoken in the same corner of Europe since before the languages around it arrived.

The World's Biggest Food Fight

If you're in the tiny town of Buñol on the last Wednesday in August, be ready for a food fight. The rest of the year, Buñol is a quiet town of about 9,000. Trucks roll in with about 150 tons of overripe tomatoes, and around 20,000 people spend one glorious hour pelting each other. A loud bang starts the hour, a second bang ends it, and everybody has to stop throwing right then. Then the fire trucks pull up and hose the whole town down. Tomatoes are acidic with cleaning agents, so Buñol locals like to say the streets end up cleaner than it was that morning.

Horses With Better Hair Than Most People

The Andalusian horse takes its name from Andalusia, in southern Spain. Its ancestors have lived on the Iberian Peninsula for thousands of years, and breeders have kept it as a distinct breed since the 1400s. Andalusians are smart, calm, and gorgeous, and their handlers braid those long manes into ribbons and patterns, partly to keep all that hair under control, but manely because it looks great.
