      The Viehscheid

    1. Every September in rural Bavaria, people celebrate the return of the local cows from their months-long trip to the mountains, where all the best summer grass grows. The cows-of-the-hour are dressed up in flowers or polished cowbells. A live orchestra plays. People chow down on cheese (thanks to the very same cows)! Everyone parties until the cows come home — and after, too.

      Animals: Dachshunds

    1. Germany is the birthplace of about 1,500 types of sausage — and one beloved, sausage-shaped breed of dog. Dachshunds are so popular that they were chosen as the mascot for the 1972 Munich Olympics. There's even a museum in Passau dedicated to the breed, the Dackelmuseum. That's one hot dog.

      Awesomeness: Unicorn Cave

    1. When this cave was first discovered hundreds of years ago, it was thought to be a burial ground for . . . unicorns! But scientists have since discovered that all those giant bones are actually those of prehistoric animals, like bears, lions, and mammoths. Still pretty awesome, just in a different way.
