DIY Nail Polish

I am sure many mothers can relate--my daughter asks me almost every day if she can paint her own nails! I love her independence and her love of color, but nail polish and age five don't exactly mix so well. We decided to make her very own temporary, washable, and non-toxic polish that she can make herself and use to paint her nails all on her own. Best of all, it washed right off of her and everything else.

  1. Ages: 3 - 11

  2. <30 minutes

  3. A little messy

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Making our own nail polish was so much fun for Emma. She loved the entire process. She helped me gather a few ingredients and we got to work.

  • Step 2

She mixed up the cornstarch with a little bit of water and a drop of food coloring. Paintbrushes worked great for the mixing and applying.

We headed outside and she got to painting. She was thrilled to do this all on her own, and even though the nail polish washes right off she loved it! I realized it was more about the "grown-up" process than actually having nail polish on.
