Use staples and felt and learn this no-fuss way to make a festive tote for all your goodies. Or, replace the staples with metal rivets for a sturdier version.

Take your felt sheet (ours measured 12 in. x 12 in.), and fold it in thirds to create a 4 in. x 12 in. long rectangle.  Press firmly along the creases. Open the sheet and fold it into thirds the other way.  Press firmly along these creases as well.

Following the crease lines, trim
 two 4-inch slits on opposite ends.  If you need help following the 
crease lines, use a pencil to lightly trace the lines so you can cut 
more easily.

The felt sheet should now have 
three square flaps on opposite ends.  Align the three flaps on one end 
together to create three sides of the basket.  Staple the felt together 
neatly along the top.  Tuck the loose bottom flap in underneath.  Adult 
supervision may be required!

Do the same for the opposite end.  You should now have the basic bottom of the basket.

To make the handle, pick three pipe cleaners of different colors.  Braid these together.

To attach the handle to the 
basket, pinch together the folded flap on the side of the basket. 
   Using scissors, make a small quarter-inch long cut about 1-inch below
 the edge of the basket.  Do the same for the opposite end.

Take your pipe cleaner handle 
and insert one end into the hole and fold up the ends on the inside to 
secure it.  Do the same for the opposite end.

You now have your basket!  Use 
extra felt or pipe cleaners to decorate your new basket.  Try adding 
ears, a nose, and a bunny tail.

Is a square egg possible? Use the scientific method with a series of egg-based experiments that explore chemistry, physics, and biology.

When you hard boil an egg, molecular chemistry is at work. Eggs are made up mostly of two kinds of molecules: protein and water. The proteins in a raw egg are like twisted and folded strings, floating in a watery soup. They’re held that way by weak chemical bonds within the protein (and by the water, which pushes on different parts of the protein).
 When you heat up the egg, though, the proteins start moving and shaking. They shake so much that they break their weak bonds and unfold. As they unfold, the proteins end up making new, stronger chemical bonds between each other. That turns the egg into a latticework of protein, with water trapped in between. This is what’s going on when the boiled egg turns from transparent to white.
 
Once the boiled egg cools down, the proteins settle and the bonds solidify to make the rubbery egg we’re familiar with. When they’re still hot, though, the bonds between the proteins are moldable, kind of like clay. What would happen, then, if you molded an egg before it cooled down? Try it out in this project and see for yourself!

Make a 1 ½-inch square box out of the cereal box. Fold it together inside out, so the waxy outside of the cereal box is on the inside. Tape the box together.

Place two eggs in the bottom of the pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 10 minutes. Then, remove from heat. You may need a grown-up to assist you.

Use the slotted spoon to remove one egg from the pot, and set it aside. Then, remove the second egg and use paper towels to peel it. 

The eggs will be very hot! Be careful when handling them. 

Dip the peeled egg back in the pot to remove any remaining egg shell.

Place the peeled egg into the box, pointy end down.

Carefully close the box and wrap a rubber band around it. Then, leave the box in the refrigerator for about 2 hours.

After two hours, take the box out of the refrigerator. Remove the rubber band, and take out the egg.

Peel the first egg. Then, cut into both eggs and compare them! What other shapes can you make?

This is an oldie, but a goodie -- a super fun project to create beautiful decorations for a festive Spring or Easter table.  Do note: it's pretty messy (ie., our fingers got pretty much covered in glue), so you might want to plan accordingly and cover your counter or table before you begin, and have some wet paper towels ready.  And I have to say, the mess is worth it -- we were really amazed at how great these turned out.

Blow up your balloons.  Remember, the size of your balloon will be the size of your egg -- so unless you're thinking of ostrich eggs, you don't need them to be too big.  (Do you have one of these balloon-pumper things?  They're awesome, in case you ever find yourself needing a ton of balloons for a birthday or a project like this or this.)

Measure and cut strands of your embroidery thread.  We used strands about 2 feet long.  Depending on how thickly you want to cover your balloon, you will need 10-15 strands of thread.

Pour a few tablespoons of glue into the cup.

Dip the first strand of thread into the glue.  Holding the thread over the cup of glue, pull the thread through your finger and thumb to spread the glue along the whole length of the thread. (This is where it will get messy!  But my daughter LOVED it, and I got to show her how fun it is to rub glue on your hands, let it dry and peel it off!  Weird, I know.  Did anyone else ever do that??)

Wrap the thread over the balloon, covering as much space as you can.

Repeat steps #4 & 5 with more thread, until you have covered as much of the balloon as you would like.  Note: the more you have covered the balloon, the sturdier your egg will be.  S also decided to paint more glue on the balloon after the thread was on; not sure this is a required step, but I thought it might help reinforce the structure.

After the glue on the thread has dried COMPLETELY, pop the balloon (using scissors or a knife).  Carefully pull the balloon out through a gap in the thread (you can use your fingers or tweezers).  You'll be left with a beautiful egg!

My kids just loved this colorful Easter craft!  It was the perfect addition to our Easter decor and, after dinner, the kids are going to give one to each of their grandparents!  We love crafts that can double as handmade gifts for the family to cherish!

Gather all materials.  We had some great felt flower stickers and some foam bugs that we used for this.  We also used leftover birthday tissue paper that we had cut into small squares for another project.

We decided that we wanted to make smaller plaques so we cut our sheets of adhesive foam into fourths and used two pieces for each project.  My 9-year-old drew an egg shape on her foam piece and I drew egg shapes for my younger kids.

We cut out the first egg and used the leftover hole to trace an identical egg on the other piece of foam.  Be sure to trace your egg shape on the back of your foam piece (where the adhesive is) to make sure that the two pieces match up.  We had to learn this the hard way when our first project didn't match up!

Once all the egg shapes were cut, the kids carefully peeled the adhesive backing off of their foam pieces.  My 4-year-old was able to do this easily without any help.

I cut contact paper squares to cover the egg hold and the kids laid the contact paper on top of the adhesive side of their foam piece.  My son laid his contact paper with the sticky side facing down so he had to start over.  The second time we were very careful to help him attach his contact paper to the foam with the sticky side facing up!

Once everyone had their contact paper attached to both pieces of foam, they decorated the contact paper on one piece with their tissue paper squares.  Some of the kids tried to make patterns.  My 4-year-old just sprinkled and then squashed his tissue paper.

After decorating, the kids laid their second piece of foam on top of their decorated piece.  They were very careful to attach them so that the egg holes lined up.

My kids then added foam stickers to their plaques.  I loved this extra piece of personalization.  When everyone was finished, we hung a garland across the kitchen window to finish off our Easter decor.

My kids love making noise! I imagine that's why they love rocking out to homemade instruments... These easy-to-make maracas look like papier mache--but without all the mess.

We had a bunch of Easter eggs laying around, but you could use any small plastic item you can fill. If you don't have wash tape, you could use masking tape and color the finished maracas yourself.

First the kids half-filled the eggs with rice. They both loved this part and had fun adding different amounts of rice and listening to how the sounds would change.

Next, they placed the egg between two plastic spoons. Then they taped around the spoons to secure the egg.

Then we added strips of tape across the top to cover the top of the egg.

We just wrapped the tape around the rest of the egg and down the spoon handles to cover. My five-year-old liked wrapping the maracas, although my three-year-old found it more challenging and had her brother help.

So easy, right? Now my little noisemakers have their own little noisemakers. And we have no mess to clean up! A win-win craft project, in my book.

Where do fizzy tablets get their fizz? After all, when they're in the package, they don't do anything at all. But drop them into a glass of water, and fizzy tablets (like Alka-Seltzer) immediately start fizzing, filling the glass with bubbles. The bubbles are full of carbon dioxide, just like in a glass of soda or fizzy water. You're seeing a chemical reaction in the glass, where compounds in the fizzy table react to make something new — in this case, carbon dioxide (and some other things). You can see this happen in a plain old glass of water, but these jumping Easter eggs are a festive way to have fun with fizzy tablets! in this case, carbon dioxide (and some other things). These egg rockets should only be launched outside, as they can make a bit of a mess. Make sure that children are wearing safety goggles and are closely supervised. The eggs will fly quite high, and children should be kept far back to avoid the launch area.

Plan, sketch, and cut out designs for your animal. Consider what kind of shapes you might need to create them. We decided to go with a woodland theme so we created a fox, an owl, and a bunny. We used some circles, triangles and teardrop shapes, to create them.

Attach your shapes to the egg with glue. We used glue sticks to attach the paper shapes to themselves, but needed hot glue to attach the paper shapes to the Easter eggs. Make sure to ask for grownup help, if needed.

Now it's time to make your animals come to life! Accessorize with googly eyes, a mouth, and any other features your animal may have. What additional features will your animals have?

Stop! When the eggs are ready, make sure to head outside before launching your eggs. Put on safety goggles, and keep children well back from the launch area.

To launch, place two fizzy tablets into the bottom half of an egg. Then fill the top half of the egg about halfway with water. Quickly close the egg and step back. After a few seconds, your egg should pop open and fly! The height of the rocket surprised us! While really exciting, make sure to take necessary precautions. We recommend for little ones to wear safety goggles!

Ever made a volcano with baking soda and vinegar? The fizz you get when you drop a fizzy tablet into a glass of water is exactly the same reaction. Fizzy tablets contain sodium bicarbonate (also called baking soda) mixed with citric acid, plus some other stuff. In their solid form, the baking soda and acid can't react, which is why the tablets don't fizz while they're in the package. But when the tablets are dropped in water, the baking soda and citric acid get together and fizz.

When this reaction happens inside of an Easter egg, the walls of the egg trap the gas inside. As the egg is filled with more and more gas, the pressure inside the egg increases. Eventually, the gas inside the egg pushes hard enough to make the egg pop open and launch!
