Newspaper Ornaments

Our four-year-old son has entered the dinosaur phase--he loves them! So much so that he wanted to decorate the Christmas tree with dinosaur ornaments. Unfortunately, we don't have T. rexes in our Christmas storage bin--so we got creative and made our own. This turned out to be an easy and fun craft that our son loved. The best part for me: We were able to make them from items in our recycling bin!

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

We cut the newspaper and cereal boxes into smaller rectangles so that the cookie cutters would fit on them.

  • Step 2

Then we glued the newspaper to the cardboard (yes, right on top if it). We used white glue, but any kind of glue would work for this.

  • Step 3

Our son picked out some dinosaur cookie cutters and traced them onto the newspaper. (You could use any kinds of cookie cutters--butterflies, stars, gingerbread, etc.)

Next, we cut out the shapes. All the curves helped our son work on his fine motor skills.

  • Step 5

Punch a hole in the shapes and tie a string through the hole.
