Number Stars Flashlight Game

My 3 year old is learning to recognize numbers up to 20. We found a fun way to practice, with a bonus: it also gets him excited about bedtime. I wrote numbers on star shapes, taped them to the ceiling, and we played the flashlight game.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

I found these star-shaped cutouts at the dollar store. You can easily plug "star template" into a search engine and print them, draw them freehand, or trace them from a cookie cutter, ornament or other star shaped object.

  • Step 2

I wrote the numbers as large as possible and with a thick Sharpie so they would be very visible on the ceiling.

  • Step 3

Next I put painter's tape on the back of each star to protect the paint on our ceiling. My 3 year old watched this whole process while I told him about the fun game Mommy was making just for him. We even made a game of writing the numbers: he would tell me which number to write next.

  • Step 4

Next, we headed upstairs to put the numbers on the ceiling above his bed. He had fun jumping up and trying to get the stars.

  • Step 5

Next, he grabbed the flashlight and we talked about the ways to play the game. He could shine the light on each star and call out the number or I could call out a number and he could find it with the flashlight. He also had fun telling me which numbers to find and I shone the flashlight.

  • Final result!

Most fun of all, when bedtime came, he was so excited to try the new game now that it was dark out. After brushing teeth and getting ready, he hopped in bed and we played our new game. Learning numbers and an easy, stress-free bedtime. Now that makes a momma happy.
