Step-by-step tutorial
Step 1
Some green felt and round wooden pieces (or even cardboard) are all you need to make some play money.
Step 2
We first chatted about coins and looked at some examples. Then Emma got to work on drawing the numbers right onto the wooden pieces. She was very focused.
Step 3
While she worked on that, I cut the green felt into small rectangles to make "paper" money.

And here is our money, ready for some fun play. Emma immediately set up a grocery store with her little wooden cash register. I gave her things like paper bags and my actual market receipts to use as well. Later in the evening, she practiced counting the money with Daddy.
