Word Game Magnets

Finding ways to bring literacy into our home in a fun, no-pressure way is something I am constantly searching for. These magnets were the best thing my kids have gotten their little hands-on since Christmas! They had a blast moving the letters around and making silly words up. It was great and they were so simple to make. I know they will be around for a while. We already love leaving notes for each other on the refrigerator.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

We used some old game pieces to create our magnets. If you don't have any on hand to spare, the craft stores sell these wooden pieces separately now or you can always hit up a thrift store for an old game.

  • Step 2

We cut some adhesive magnet strips into small pieces and stuck them onto each wooden letter. The kids thought this was such fun, even though it took a while to get through all the letters.

  • Step 3

We collected all of the finished magnets in a jar and headed to the fridge.

  • Final result!

My daughter had so much fun trying to put together words--especially making up words of her own and making me pronounce them for her. I love that we now have a fun way to leave each other notes and happy thoughts each day, but mostly that my children are having fun and enjoying learning new letters and forming words all on their own.
