Step 1
Set out what you need. It helps to be prepared before you plan to call the kids to help with the experiment.
Step 2
Use one of your funnels to pour vinegar into the bottle (about 1/3 full.) Use your other funnel to pour baking soda into the balloon (about 1/2 full). My husband helped my oldest son with this part. Both of my boys were so excited when we got started with this experiment.
Step 3
Now take the balloon and pinch as you wrap on the top of the bottle so that none of the baking soda goes in just yet. This is what it will look like. We helped my son with this too. (Older kids can do this step on their own, too.)
Step 4
Now that you have the balloon on the top of the bottle, lift the balloon up, which causes the baking soda to pour out into the bottle. This causes a carbon dioxide gas reaction that causes the balloon to inflate. Watching the balloon expand was so cool!
Final result!
After the balloon is fully expanded, make sure to discard the balloon (as balloons are a choking hazard). As you can see, both of my boys were amazed by this experiment. And my husband and I had fun teaching the boys something new!
