Banana Truffles

My kids are pretty picky eaters, so we try to stay away from super-sugary treats, or that's all they would eat. However, like most kids, they like treats. We decided to make some chocolate-dipped banana truffles (with healthy topics). No big surprise, the truffles were a hit!

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

Start by gathering up your supplies. I let the kids choose the toppings they wanted by offering them a variety of "healthy" options, such as unsweetened coconut, chopped nuts, and chopped cheerios. Any item you can chop or crumble would work great; letting the kids pick gets them more involved in the process. We added each topping to a small bowl for dipping.

  • Step 2

Start by cutting the bananas into bite-size pieces. Then stick a toothpick in each one.

  • Step 3

Melt the chocolate in a bowl. (I placed a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, heated the chocolate for a few seconds at a time, stirred, and repeated until the chocolate was sufficiently melted.) The kids then picked up the bananas and dipped them in the chocolate. They used a spoon to help coat the banana. Both my kids (ages 5 and 3) were able to do this by themselves and they loved it.

  • Step 4

Once the chocolate stopped dripping from the banana chunks, they dipped them in the bowl of toppings to coat the truffles. My son's favorite was the coconut, although it was the hardest to get to coat.

  • Final result!

Let the truffles sit on the parchment paper until the chocolate dries. You can pop them in the fridge for a bit if you'd like. When feeding the truffles to young children, it would be best to remove the toothpick; however, both of my kids liked using the toothpick to hold up their truffles. Chocolate treats on a stick; what's not to love?
