Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

I wrote numbers (1-10) on leftover Valentine's Day cards we had and also on envelopes. I taped the envelopes around the house and had my little mailman "deliver" the cards to the matching number envelope.

  • Step 2

At first, I just handed her one card at a time. She'd identify the number and we'd hunt for the matching envelope together. Next time, I'm going to tape the envelopes in order in a line instead of spreading them out all over the house.

  • Step 3

After doing it a few times together, she wanted to be in charge of all of the cards at once. It was so much fun watching her pretend to be a mailman!

  • Final result!

The great part about this activity is that it combines pretend play with learning. Instead of numbers, you could match letters, colors, words, or even math facts. For even more fun, dress up with a mailman's hat and bag.
