3 Fun Pumpkin Experiments for Fall

Halloween is around the corner, and that means there's a pumpkin patch heading to a grocery store parking lot near you! While you're hunting for the perfect jack o' lantern, consider picking up an extra pumpkin or two to try out one of these fun pumpkin-based science experiments. Turn a pumpkin into a battery and measure it's electrical output, gross out your neighbors with an oozing jack o'lantern, or see how many rubber bands it takes to make a pumpkin explode!

Harness the power of pumpkins with a pumpkin battery and see how many volts it can produce!

This project is pretty similar to another DIY we’ve featured, the Lemon Battery. Just like with the lemon, pumpkins have acidic juices inside that help transport electrical energy. Lemons are more acidic, so that’s why they’re the normal go-to for building batteries. For fall time, here’s how to do the same thing with pumpkins!

If you have a ton of rotting pumpkins on your porch, try this to get one last use out of them before you throw them away!

Did you know you can cause a pumpkin to explode with nothing but a few hundred rubber bands? This experiment is a fun way to get one last use out of your halloween pumpkins before they rot. First step, make a hypothesis. What do you predict will happen to the pumpkin once you have added enough rubber bands? Next step, observe, record and explain your results. What forces are at play in this experiment? Why do the rubber bands eventually cause the pumpkin to explode? This experiment from our friends over at ScienceAtlantic is an exciting, festive way to learn the physics of force, pressure and surface resistance. Safety goggles and supervision recommended!
