Alphabet Ball Game

I confess: I have a bad habit. I fall in love with early literacy activities on Pinterest, pin them to my boards, add them to my very long to-do list, and then never find the time to actually try them. So I decided I was overdue to start experimenting. Project number one: Sight Word Beach Ball from Quirky Momma's Kids Activity Blog.

Step-by-step tutorial

  • Step 1

To start, I gathered my supplies: a $1.00 beach ball from Target and a Sharpie. This project was already looking like a good first pick! I only needed TWO supplies. Then I invited my 2.5-year-old, C, to join me. Since he isn't ready to read sight words yet, I changed the activity a little bit by asking him to brainstorm letters (instead of words) as I wrote them on the ball.

Then came C's favorite part! He tossed the ball into the air as high as his little arms would let him.

When the ball landed, he picked it up with both hands and named the letters that his thumbs were touching. If he didn't know the letters, I simply named them and asked him to repeat them after me. His smile says it all, doesn't it?! I'm excited to finally be able to say that I pinned it, did it, and LOVED it. Now it's your turn!
